Covering Victorville, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Adelanto, Phelan, Pinon Hills, Silver Lakes, Lucerne Valley
Native American Indians were the first to inhabit the region. By the mid 1800s the Mormon Trail had become
a well used route for travellers journeying to the west and Hesperia was a recognized stopping point. Hesperia
was officially named in 1885 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad completed construction of a
depot. At the same time Joseph Widney set about creating a town and he established the Hesperia Land and
Water Company. Agriculture was the main industry of the area.
By the early 1900s the automobile was becoming the mode of transportation and Hesperia continued to be
the last stopping point before beginning the trek through the Cajon Pass. This changed in 1924 with the
construction of Route 66 which bypassed Hesperia to the west. Hesperia was incorporated as a city in 1988.
Currently the population is around 70,000.
